Detach files from PDF and set password by PDF Toolbox

   VeryPDF Toolbox Command Line either can be used to add attachment to PDF to detach PDF, which means that remove attachments from PDF file. And when you finish detaching, this software also can help you set password for protecting output PDF file. If you need to reorder PDF files by command line from many aspects, this software is a good choice for you. In the following part, I will show you how to use this software to fulfill this function.

First, download PDF Toolbox Command Line

  • This software is command line version and once downloading finishes, there will be an zip file. Please extract the zip file to some folder then you can check the elements in it. And there are three folders when in the extracted folder. Please find the executable file in the bin folder.
  • Please run the conversion according to the example and usage. Please make sure download the right version when you download this software. Say when you need to know more about the Linux version, please go to Linux tab.

Second, detach PDF and set password for it

Usage: pdftoolbox <input files> [options] <-outfile output >

  • When you need to detach files from PDF, please refer to the following command line template.
    pdftoolbox "_attachfile_out.pdf" -detachfile -outfile _detachfiles
    Please inputting command line, do not forget to specify the output file path leading by –outfile parameter. And parameter           -detachfile is an order to detach files from PDF.
  • When you need to set password for PDF file, please refer to the following command line template.
  • pdftoolbox 1.pdf -outfile 1.128.pdf -ownerpassword foopass
    pdftoolbox 1.pdf -outfile out.pdf -ownerpassword opwd -userpassword upwd
    pdftoolbox 1.pdf -outfile out.pdf -ownerpassword opwd -userpassword upwd -permit printing

    -key40bit : set output PDF encryption strength as 40 bits.
    -key128bit : set output PDF encryption strength as 128 bits.
    -permit <permissions>   : permissions are applied to the output PDF only if encryption strength is specified or an owner or   user password is given.

          printing           : allow top quality printing.
         lowprinting       : allow lower quality printing.
         modifycontents : allow modifying contents.
         assembly           : allow document assembly.
         copying              : allow copying.
         screenreader     : allow screenreader.
         modifyannot      : allow adding annotation.
         filling                  : allow filling interactive PDF form.
         allowall              : allow all the above permissions and top quality printing.
    -ownerpassword    : set owner password to output PDF file.
    -userpassword      : set user password to output PDF file.
